Task assigned / Instruction

We were tasked to pick one popular fairy-tale/folklore story and create an audiobook. We were requested to record the voice with the suitable voice acting and combine with the selected sound effects to highlight and enhance the storytelling experience. Mr. Razif allowed us to ask for a friend's help in the voice acting and he mentioned that background music is not advisable to be included throughout the video.

Elements required:
- Fairy-tale / folklore Story
- Narration, Dialogue

Week 9 (24/10/2022)

This week, I started to brainstorm the story of fairy-tale to be used for this project. I think I will seek few of my friends to help me with my voice-acting audio footage, depends on which idea is approved, and how many character i want my friend to voice-over.

Ideation 1:

Ideation 2:

Week 9 (25/10/2022)

After consulting for Mr Razif's feedback, him and my majority of my classmates like the first idea more. Since the story is half self create, he tells me I can try to use AI generated images if I couldn't find the suitable images.

IDEATION

My final decision of the fairy-tale story choice is the first story, this is the synopsis.

PROGRESS

Week 10 (30/10/2022)

After completing the script, I do the screenshot required to get the necessary image from multiple episodes of Gintama TV series. According to the script I wrote, I then edited the images so that their size and scaling look consistent.

Week 10 (31/10/2022)

Then, I start to do the editing on the audio files. Firstly, I remove the background noise that will affect the listening experience, from the narration + dialogue audio file.

This is how it looks for the first version without modifying any sound.

Lastly, I add the images into the audio file, by using Wondershare Filmora, which I'm familiar with.

Week 10 (1/11/2022)

Audio ver 1

This is the version which I didn't do any EQ on the dialogue.

Feedback 1

After listening sending this audio track for Mr Razif to review, I realized that it will be better if i add "To Be Continued" in the end of the story. After reviewing my audio track, Mr Razif mentioned that I need to act out the voice first, then only I see if the dialogue voice requires modification or not. He also recommend me to add sound effect and music on some part.

Week 10 (4/11/2022)

Audio ver 2

Feedback 2

After listening sending this audio track for Mr Razif to review, he came back to me with such things to improve with:

  • narration voice sounds heavier towards the right speaker
  • has some reverb that made it sound like in a toilet.
  • the singing part... "aku tak boleh kedepan..". also heavy to the right while the visual, the character is on the left
According to Mr Razif's word:

"The logic behind panning is narration normally always has to be center, unless at certain point we want to emphasis on something to make it a bit more dramatic perhaps, then we can play around with effects and panning. then after go back to center, dont apply any effects to make it sound better. Voice actors are ok to pan around."

Week 10 (5/11/2022)

Audio ver 3

I tried to implements dereverb to fix the issue of narration sounds like reverbed audio, however no matter how i change the setting of dereverb, it still sounds weird as there are certain frequency of sound getting modified into a low quality of audio. So in the end I choose to not adding the dereverb into my narration audio. Other than that, I fixed all the issue from the previous feedback.

Feedback 3

According to Mr Razif, I don't have any ambience in between the sound, so it feels empty in between the narration and the voice-over. I also dont have a lot music in the background. Then, some of the voice-over is louder than narration, which is what we typically wouldn't want to happens. Most important thing is, I need to make the voice-over sounds like they coming from the same source of microphone. Hence, I will need to EQ the voice of different talents so that I can make the source different not so obvious.

Finally, I get to utilize dereverb on the voice recorded by the talents by further exploring the dereverb feature.

Week 10 (6/11/2022)

Final Audio

After listening to the feedback YouTube Video by Mr Razif, I worked on to solve all the problem stated above, and this is my FINAL OUTPUT for Project 2: Sound Design / Audio Storytelling:

REFLECTION

Through this project, I've gained a better comprehension of the features in Adobe Audition, such as EQ, Noise Reduction, and DeReverb. I was grateful to my friends, who acts as the voice actors or A.K.A talents, for assisting me with the voice-acting process, it really played a significant role in making my work completed successfully. Besides, the feedback I received from Mr. Razif has been valuable in refining my work and developing my understanding towards audio storytelling, voice narrating, and voice acting. I learnt a lot while doing this project!
